Introduction
Introduction
IVAO was founded at the end of 1998 as an alternative for the former SATCO network (now known as VATSIM) with as main objective the creation of a friendly and enjoyable environment for virtual flying and controlling. What was started by some friends has now become one of the greatest flight simulator communities of the world with approx. 75,000 members.
In the past 10 years, many enthusiastic members have helped IVAO to become the organisation we know today. To offer all members the best possible service, an awful lot of work has been done by the IVAO headquarter (http://www.ivao.aero/hq) as well as by the Belgian division (http://be.ivao.aero/).
The most important objective of IVAO is to provide the flight simulator community with the most realistic virtual aviation environment. This is done via a real-time simulation environment for online flying (as a pilot) and online ATC (as air-traffic controller) using the present weather conditions, with several databases containing aeronautical information and via the organisation of training sessions and online events.
Virtual pilots and air-traffic controllers are able to communicate with each other over the network. This communication is mainly and preferably voice-based as it is in reality but it could also be text-based.
The procedures used on IVAO, the approach- and departure routes, the airways … are based on aeronautical procedures also in use by real life pilots and controllers. Someone flying on IVAO is accompanied by an air-traffic controller and not by the built-in ATC in the flight simulator. The replacement of the computer voice giving pre-programmed instructions by the IVAO ATC is one the major differences when flying online. The presence of many other virtual pilots creates a highly interactive environment. And what makes things even better: this whole experience is almost for free, all you need is an internet connection and a headset!
When going online, we expect our virtual pilots to be able to fly their aircraft and to take-off and land safely.
Going online is possible by using your username and password on one of our servers available 24/day, worldwide.
Our motto: “As Real as it Gets“
