Brussels Tower (118.600MHz)
Runway preferential system
When the wind is calm, RWY25R (departure) and RWY 25L (landing) are always used. On request or when there is a lot of traffic, RWY25R may also be used for landing (advise tower timely). RWY 25L may also exceptionally be requested for departure, but landing traffic will always have priority on this runway.
Depending on the wind, the following RWY's may be active:
- Take-off: RWY 07R and 07L for traffic to the east and south, RWY 02 for traffic to the north, the west and CIV
Landing: RWY 02 - Take-off: RWY 25R for traffic to the north, the west and CIV , RWY 20 for traffic to the east
Landing: RWY 25R and 25L - Take-off: RWY 25R for traffic to the north, the west and CIV , RWY 20 for traffic to the east
Landing: RWY 20 - Take-off: RWY 25R for traffic to the north, the west and CIV , RWY 07R for traffic to the east Landing: RWY 20
Inbounds
Brussels Approach/Arrival will hand off aircraft to TWR as soon as they are established on ILS.
When contacting Brussels Tower, pilots need to say always on what runway they are established, to avoid mistakes.
|
Pilot: Sobelair 2434, Established ILS Runway 25L |
|
ATC: Sobelair 2434, Continue ILS approach Runway 25L |
or
|
ATC: Sobelair 2434, Wind 240 degrees 10 knots, Runway 25L Cleared to land |
Wind-checks shall be rounded up or down to the nearest ten degrees (243° will become 240°; 246° will be 250°). When several aircraft are on the ILS, pilots shall expect a late landing clearance, because two aircraft can never possess the same runway, or here, be cleared to land at the same time.
|
ATC: Sobelair 2434, Continue ILS approach Runway 25L, number 2 ( number 1 is x miles final) |
When there isn't an aircraft close behind Sobelair 2434, ATC can tell the pilots that "C5 is approved". This means for pilots they don't have to brake hard and vacate as quick as possible, but can vacate at C5. However, this never means pilots have to vacate at C5, it is only approved.
|
ATC: Sobelair 2434, Winds 210 degrees 10 knots, Runway 25L,Cleared to land, vacating via (intersection) C5 approved. |
Pilots need to vacate the runway as quickly as possible, so that the following aircraft can be cleared to land. ATC may not tell the pilots where they have to vacate.
If vacated runway 25L at C4, TWR will clear to cross runway 02/20 prior to hand-off to GND.
Crossing RWY 02: ATC gives the clearance, even when 02 is not active, to let the pilots know for sure they may cross.
|
Pilot: Sobelair 2434, Runway 25L vacated C4 |
|
ATC: Sobelair 2434, Cross RWY 02, contact Brussels ground 121.875 |
Missed Approach Procedure or Go around
If the pilot decides to go around, he has to immediately inform TWR and follow its instructions. If no radio contact, or when no special instructions received, then follow the standard missed approach procedure as published on the charts:
-
RWY 25L : Climb to 2500 ft. When passing 700 ft, turn left onto heading 120° to intercept R-266 inbound to Flora VOR (FLO, 112.05), on that radial continue climb 4500 ft.
-
RWY 25R : Climb to 2000 ft. When passing 700 ft turn right heading 020° to intercept and follow R-251 inbound to Bruno VOR (BUN, 110.60). On this radial continue clib to 3000 ft.
-
RWY 20 : Climb straight ahead and intercept R-286 outbound Huldenberg VOR (HUL, 117.55), then turn right to RODRI intersection, climbing to 4000 ft
-
RWY 02 : Climb on track 015 up to 1500 ft then turn left climbing to 4000 ft and inbound to Affligem VOR (AFI, 114.90)
-
RWY07L : On MAPt left turn inbound to Bruno VOR (BUN, 110.60) and climb to 3000 ft.
If TWR has to give instructions for the missed approach procedure (go around), don't give all the instructions at once. The following phrase can be given at or before 1000 ft:
|
ATC: Argan 017, continue runway heading climb 4000 ft. |
or
|
ATC: Argan 017, turn left hdg 180°, climb 4000 ft contact Brussels Approach 118.250 |
or
|
ATC: Argan 017, follow standard missed approach procedure |
AFTER read-back (=confirmation) from the pilot:
VFR
VFR flights should be sufficiently equipped to be allowed in the Brussels FIR.
Sightseeing in the vicinity of Brussels is under Tower's approval. It is required to fly below 1500 ft. Tower may cancel or refuse local VFR / Sightseeing at any time!
Prohibited area
It's prohibited to fly over the city of Brussels itself. Check the charts for more information.
Outbounds
Once airborne, aircraft shall contact Brussels Approach/Departure as soon as possible, unless otherwise instructed by the Tower. The hand-off instruction may be given just before take-off or directly when airborne
Line up:
|
ATC: Virgin Express 802, line up and wait runway 25R and wait |
Note: No departure clearance may be given any more when an arriving aircraft has passed the Outer Marker of RWY 25L! Reason: In case of go-around 25L you may have a conflicting situation.
|
ATC: Virgin Express 802, Winds 080 degrees 5 knots, runway 25R cleared for take-off. |
When another aircraft is waiting at the same holding position behind in the number two position, a conditional clearance is given:
|
ATC: Virgin Express 802, behind departing BruAirlines A320, line up and wait runway 25R behind and wait. |
Note: you have to say "behind" and “wait” twice ! And note to always check that the second aircraft has the departing aircraft (number one) in sight!
|
Pilot: Behind departing A320, line up and wait runway 25R behind, Virgin Express 802 |
Same could be said for landing traffic: If landing traffic is in-side, line-up and wait behind.
Practical notes:
-
Try to release faster aircraft first, then slower second! (Manage this already by proper taxi clearances)
-
When there's a lot of departing traffic, it's highly recommended to interchange the aircraft by their direction of departure. So one left turnout, then one right turnout, one left, ... Otherwise ATC has to wait to manage the required separation when two aircraft departing into the same direction.
-
Expect to contact approach/departure control as soon as possible when airborne! This can easily be instructed by saying "When airborne contact Brussels Departure on 126.625".
- Preferably this instruction has to be given before the take-off clearance, as ATC may not interfere when the aircraft is rolling. Alternative is well after being airborne......
- Be aware what the impact is on the total traffic, when a change of active runway is considered. Only change the actual runway with low or no traffic around, in the air and on the ground.
